The primary focus of TiGenix’s R&D has been the development of durable and effective treatments for cartilage damage in the knee. This research has led to the development of ChondroCelect®.
ChondroCelect is TiGenix’ leading product, since it is in late stage development for cartilage repair in the otherwise healthy knee. Cartilage defects of the knee are very common and the spontaneous healing capacity of cartilage is limited. Currently, roughly 2 million cases of articular cartilage defects of the knee are diagnosed worldwide every year. TiGenix estimates that in Europe and the United States around 130,000 patients are eligible for treatment with cartilage regeneration products such as ChondroCelect.
ChondroCelect is a cell-based medicinal product consisting of chondrocytes (cartilage-forming cells) that are taken from a healthy region of the patient’s cartilage, grown outside the body, and then re-implanted during an autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) surgical procedure.
