TGX003

Meniscus tears are a very common injury of the knee and, like cartilage defects, their spontaneous healing capacity is usually very low. TiGenix estimates that more than 2 million meniscectomies are performed annually in Europe and the United States. It is generally accepted that patients who have had this procedure are more likely to develop osteoarthritis. Furthermore, very few products are approved which address meniscal regeneration.

TGX003 is TiGenix’s biological product under development for the repair of meniscal lesions. Meniscus tissue displays a number of similarities to articular cartilage, the limited degree of regeneration, a (fibro-) cartilage-like appearance and the involvement of cells with similar characteristics as chondrocytes. For the development of TGX003, TiGenix can rely on its expertise gained in the development of ChondroCelect.
