Mosaicplasty

The patient undergoes an exploratory operation during which small, cylindrical bars of bone with healthy cartilage are removed from a non-supporting (lesser weight-bearing) section of the joint (1). Small holes are then drilled at the location of the cartilage lesion, into which these bars will be located (2). Since it is only possible to remove a limited amount of healthy cartilage and bone, this treatment is only possible for injuries with a maximum area of 2 to 3 cm². Although the layer of cartilage may recover, it will usually not form a smooth surface.
